How to Create and Deploy an Online Test

By Admin · Updated 1 August 2026

Quick answer: In the Assessment tab, switch to "Online Quiz (MCQ)", fill in your class and topics, generate the questions, confirm to create a live link, then share that link with your class by copy/paste or WhatsApp. Students answer on their own phones with a class + name + 4-digit PIN, and you see scored results on your dashboard — no manual marking.

Step 1: Switch to Online Quiz mode

Open the Assessment tab and toggle from 📄 Printed Document to 💻 Online Quiz (MCQ) at the top of the form. This unlocks the online-specific fields below.

Step 2: Fill in the basics

Step 3: Choose topics and question settings

Step 4: Generate and review

Tap Generate — questions stream in live. Once ready, review each one. If a question isn't right, tap 🔄 Replace this question — you get 5 free replacements per batch, and replacing one only touches that single question, not the rest of your set.

Credits are charged at generation time based on question count: 1–50 questions = 1 credit, 51–100 = 2, 101–150 = 3, 151–200 = 4. Reviewing and replacing afterward doesn't cost anything extra.

Step 5: Confirm and create the link

Once you're happy with the questions, confirm to actually create the live quiz. This is the point the link starts to exist — it auto-expires 7 days after creation. From here you can:

Step 6: How students take it

Students open the link on their own phone or device — no SHS Planner account needed on their end:

  1. Select their class
  2. Type or search their name (live suggestions help avoid duplicate entries)
  3. Set a 4-digit PIN the first time, or enter the same one on return visits
  4. Read the instructions screen (topic breakdown, time limit, number of questions)
  5. Answer the timed quiz — question and option order is shuffled per student
  6. Submit
If you've locked a class to a fixed roster (see Step 7), only pre-registered names are accepted — a student can't self-register with a new name in a locked class.

Step 7: Managing classes and rosters

Before or after deploying a quiz, you can:

Step 8: Reviewing results

Results live on your dashboard — there's no public results page. For each quiz you can see:

When a quiz closes — either you close it manually, or it auto-closes 7 days after creation — you automatically receive a full report by email: stats, topics covered, a student table, and item analysis (which questions were hardest, worst-first).

Step 9: Tracking performance over time

The Gradebook pulls together every quiz you've deployed to a class into one pivot table — one row per student, one column per quiz, a running total, sortable by any column, plus class-wide average/highest/lowest and simple performance charts. Useful for spotting a struggling student across several tests, not just one.

Common questions

Can I deploy the same quiz to more than one class? Yes — select multiple classes when setting it up.

What if two students have the same name? Pre-registering your roster and locking the class largely prevents this — the login search will surface the correct existing entry.

Does it work if a student loses network mid-quiz? Their progress is tied to their token and the seeded question order, so reopening the link resumes them where they left off rather than starting over.
